Hilaria starts as a Solar Sister entrepreneur. She receives a business in the bag, including business startup and branded marketing materials.

Hilaria purchases her first solar products – 12 solar lamps! A mixture of d.light S3 lights and the slightly larger SunKing Pro lights.

In her first month, Hilaria sells 25 solar products.

Hilaria organizes her fellow basket weavers into a sisterhood group called “Mshikamano” (meaning solidarity in Swahili) to coordinate their Solar Sister businesses as well as weave and sell baskets.

Hilaria starts to sell clean cookstoves. Smoke from traditional stoves and cooking fires causes 4 million premature deaths every year.

Clean cookstoves mitigate 3 TONNES of CO2 over its 10 year life

December

Hilaria starts a solar phone charging business! She is one of 10 top entrepreneurs chosen to pilot solar phone charging businesses. She is trained in operating the BBOXX BB17 Solar Home System and Solar Phone Hub that charges 9 phones at a time and she is able to buy the system on credit. She makes an additional $5-6 a week from charging phones.

Hilaria hits 1,000 mark! She has sold a total of 241 products so far reaching over 1,000 people with clean energy.

Hilaria’s biggest challenge this year is caring for her sick child, taking up time and forcing her to dip into her savings and business capital.

The Solar Sister team brings “movie night” to Hilaria’s community, and shows the movie featuring Hilaria as part of the #WESHINE campaign. That night, Hilaria kickstarts her business with new sales.

Hilaria is awarded ENERGIA’s Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award; she travels to New York to accept her €1,000 prize and speak at the 2017 Sustainable Energy for All Forum.

Hilaria attends the Solar Sister Superstar Summit with other top entrepreneurs for workshops, an award ceremony and product fair in Arusha.

Hilaria decides to invest a little of her prize money in her businesses and put the bulk of it towards her daughters’ education. 18 year-old Theresia is studying accounting in Singida and 15 year-old Gladness is a secondary school student.
