Helping Child Health In Africa
Paraffin is highly flammable and can lead to fires from improper placement (e.g. near curtains or tablecloths); use of polluted paraffin (since paraffin is highly explosive when mixed with water or other fuels); use of paraffin by children and many other causes. Fires can be particularly dangerous in low-income urban communities, where dwellings are densely located and constructed of flammable materials such as wood and cardboard.
Young children are at greatest risk of paraffin poisoning. Because paraffin has the consistency and appearance of water and in some places is stored in reused beverage containers without child-resistant caps, unsupervised children are at high risk of consuming it.
Additionally, some of our Solar Sisters are nurses or mid-wives who welcome the ability to see clearly when they make house calls and are advocates for the health benefits of solar light. Solar lamps are clean, safe and non-polluting.
It only takes a $500 investment to set up a Solar Sister entrepreneur with training, support and her initial stock of lamps. After than she is self funding and independent. With your support, a woman can become a Solar Sister Entrepreneur and bring safe and healthy light to her community.
